L'église Sainte-Madeleine est un édifice du XIIe siècle dominant un agréable site où coule la source du Freussin.

Son chevet roman (1) est caractéristique de la Saintonge, à trois registres superposés. Le chevet est quelque peu antérieur à la nef et au clocher : sa largeur et sa hauteur sont nettement moindres que ceux de la nef. La position latérale du clocher (2) est peu fréquente, d'autant plus qu'une chapelle est aménagée au rez-de-chaussée. Le voûtement en berceau brisé de la nef a nécessité d'importantes consolidations, comme l'indiquent l'arc doubleau intermédiaire porté par des culs-de-lampes (3) sur la travée occidentale et les lourds contreforts du XVe siècle sur le flanc nord (4).

A l'intérieur, la sobriété de l'architecture met en valeur les quatre chapiteaux de la travée droite du choeur. Deux sont sculptés de corbeilles végétales (5). Sur un autre, la curieuse superposition de félins (6) évoque lointainement les chapiteaux de la croisée du transept de Saint-Eutrope de Saintes. Le thème du quatrième chapiteau, par contre, s'inspire directement de Saint-Eutrope avec ses oiseaux perchés sur la croupe de lions (7). Les masques de félins aux angles du chapiteau et le style proche de celui d'Aulnay apportent un accent nouveau et conduisent vers le milieu du XIIe siècle. Les vitraux ont été réalisés et posés en 1996 après les travaux de restauration intérieure et extérieure de l'église.

The Romanesque chevet (1) is characteristic of the Saintonge style with three superimposed tiers. The chevet was builtslightly earlier than the nave and bell tower. The bell tower with a chapel on the ground floor and placed to the side (2) is uncommon.

The ribbed barrel vaulting in the nave meant that considerable consolidation was required so an intermediate ribbed arch wad added to the western span, supported by brackets (3). Heavy piers were added to the north wall (4) in the 15th-c. Inside, the austere architecture emphasises the four capitals in the south span of the choir. Two of them are carved with baskets of plants (5) on another the strange superposition of cats is vaguely reminiscent of the capitals in the transept crossing in St. Eutropius' church in Saintes. The subject matter of the fourth capital is a theme directly inspired from St. Eutropius ; it consists of birds perched on the backs of lions (7). The feline masks (6) at the corners of the capital and the style reminiscent of Aulnay are a new touch pointing to mid 12th-century work.

The stained-glass windows were made and fitted in 1996.
